What to Expect at Your First Appointment

The first appointment is the one people cancel. Not because they changed their mind about getting help, but because the unknown parts accumulate until rescheduling feels easier than walking in.

So here is the whole thing, start to finish.

Before you arrive

You complete your paperwork online before the appointment. Nothing is handed to you on a clipboard when you walk in, and you are not filling out intake forms in a waiting room while trying to remember dates.

Payment is taken in full when you book. It holds the time reserved for you with your clinician.

If you have questions between booking and arriving, The Client Concierge is the person to ask. One person handles scheduling, questions, and changes of plan, so you are not explaining your situation to someone new each time you call.

Parking and finding us

We are at 4833 Bethesda Avenue, Suite 300, on Bethesda Row. There is a parking garage directly next to the building, and street parking nearby.

Give yourself ten minutes more than you think you need the first time. Arriving unhurried changes how the first twenty minutes of a session go.

When you arrive

Your Client Concierge welcomes you, shows you the space, and gets you settled.

If you are early, you do not have to sit and watch a clock. The Cafe has tea, coffee and fresh pastries, and somewhere comfortable to work or wait. The MindSpa is a quieter option if you would rather arrive slowly and have a few unhurried minutes before you begin. If you are bringing a child, The Reset Studio is a cozy space where they can settle in first.

The appointment itself

A first therapy appointment is mostly your clinician getting the full picture: what brought you in, what has been going on and for how long, what you have already tried, and what you want to be different. You are not expected to have it organized. Talking through it in whatever order it comes out is the normal way this goes.

A first psychiatry appointment is a comprehensive evaluation. It covers mood, anxiety, attention, sleep and cognitive functioning, alongside the broader context of your life. Medical history, current medications and family history come up because they change what the findings mean.

In both cases, the clinician is listening for the shape of the thing rather than a label to apply quickly.

What you leave with

By the end of a first appointment you should understand what your clinician heard, what they think is worth paying attention to, and what the next step is. If any of that is unclear, say so before you leave. It is a reasonable thing to ask for and a good clinician would rather you ask.

Afterward

Some people feel lighter. Some feel wrung out. Both are ordinary, and neither means the appointment went badly.

If you need a few minutes before driving home or going back to work, take them. The MindSpa is there for exactly that.

Cancellations

Payment is taken in full when you book. It holds the time reserved for you with your clinician.

Cancel or reschedule with at least 72 hours' notice and what you paid is credited to your next appointment. Inside 72 hours, that payment is not refunded or credited, because the time was held for you and cannot be filled.

Letting The Client Concierge know as early as you can is the easiest way to handle it.
